Don’t know about you but between working, chauffeuring the kids around, cooking, cleaning, laundry, shopping for groceries, running errands, etc. there is very little “me” time. Even when we go on vacation, I’m the last one to pack, as I make sure everyone else is packed and nothing is forgotten. Of course the joke is on me because if anyone will forget something, it’ll be me, as I’m always the last one to pack, marathon style as we’re running out the door.
When it comes to “me-time”, it shouldn’t be surprising that 95% of Canadian moms say they had more time for themselves before motherhood, and 58% admit to sneaking in TV “me-time” while juggling a busy schedule, with some admitting to hiding from their kids for a moment of peace. Oh how I can totally relate. The need for some quality alone time is real. We come out of “hiding” feeling refreshed, ready to tackle whatever else the kids throw our way (literally). As the kids get older, one doesn’t need to hide from the kids necessarily, but it’s the waiting that’ll suck up your time.
As much as I love going out with my friends, as a natural introvert, my mom sneak includes lots of watching Netflix. Thanks to Netflix’s download feature, I sneak in my favourite shows on my iPad or iPhone whenever and wherever I can, no wi-fi or Internet needed. I’ll admit to sneaking:
- at my daughter’s hockey practices and tournaments
- at my son’s volleyball practices and tournaments
- in the car pool lane at school or in the school parking lot
- at the hospital as I wait to get testing done
- in the washroom
- folding laundry
- making dinner
- at the doctor/dentist office waiting room
- in the car waiting to pick up my daughter at work
Do I feel guilty? Hell no. There is only so much time in a day and I will
cram multi-task as much as possible. But discretion is the name of the game, as I am careful not to disturb those around me (when in public spaces), so headphones or ear buds are a must. Besides, you don’t want to give away your hideout to the kids, do you?!
My Latest Netflix Recommendations
I’ve recently discovered some new Netflix shows that are so very mom/dad sneak worthy. Ozark starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney as husband and wife who abruptly moves their family to the Ozarks where they launder money for a drug boss; Travelers is a Canadian time-travelling sci-fi series starring Eric McCormack; Shadowhunters is another terrific Canadian series that has filled my void now that The Vampire Diaries has come to an end.
