The Canadian dollar has been taking a bit of a beating lately, so now is the perfect time to consider vacationing right here in our beautiful country. We here at Tweenhood are all about trying new things, going somewhere we’ve never been before. So if you are looking for someplace out of the ordinary to vacation, check out these unique Canadian destinations.
Witness the Northern Lights
If you’ve always wanted to marvel at the Aurora Borealis, then Blachford Lake Lodge in Yellowknife, NWT, may just be your best bet. Its remote location (only accessible via bush plane) makes it the prime spot to catch the Northern Lights. Only open between August-October and December-April, activities include fishing, kayaking, hiking, dogsledding, ice fishing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and even a game of ice hockey. The lodge hosted Royals William and Kate on their Canadian Tour back in 2011.
Families can choose from various themes like the African or Western rooms or if you’re looking for a romantic getaway, the Roman or Arabian rooms may be more to your liking. Fantasyland Hotel, located inside the West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton, Alberta, has also recently added new Space themed rooms as the hotel looks to offer more family friendly experiences.
Sleep on the Water
This bed and breakfast floating hotel, or Making Waves Boatel as it is officially known, is a private 65-foot yacht that graces the downtown Toronto harbor. Guests can choose from one of the three guestrooms available or rent all three for a private affair (max 6 guests). Kids are welcome but must be at least 8 years of age.
If you enjoy outdoor activities but don’t exactly enjoy the camping element, then the Wilderness Suites at Long Point Eco Adventures in St. Williams, Ontario is for you. After a busy day ziplining, kayaking, fishing or biking, unwind in your private luxury suite, complete with private bath that’ll have you showering under the stars.
Stay at the most scenic “cottage” in Bella Coola, British Columbia. The Float House Inn is a house boat that sleeps 4, with a full kitchen and bath, multiple decks, BBQ and more. Imagine waking up surrounded by panoramic views of the Bella Coola River Estuary and mountains.
Stay overnight in a 1910 century farmhouse and get the full farm experience. Feed the hens, pick up fresh eggs for breakfast, pick your own produce straight from the garden or just sit back (or not) and enjoy all that the 160 acres Dwyer Farmhouse in Douglas, Ontario has to offer.
Ever wanted to stay in an orb shaped room above the forest floor surrounded by natural rainforest? Free Spirit Spheres on Vancouver Island in British Columbia has 3 spheres available for overnight rentals. There’s electricity but no toilet inside the spheres. The adult only location is open year-round.
