Humans have a natural curiosity for all things strange and weird. That’s why Ripley’s Believe It or Not has spanned decades of entertaining people with its odd yet fascinating stories. The Ontario Science Centre has unveiled a new exhibit that takes the Ripley’s Believe It or Not experience to a whole new level by introducing the science behind the unexplained stories.
The Science of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! exhibition contains an impressive collection of artifacts and objects from Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Kids learn through engagement by touching specimens, challenges, experiments and multimedia experiences. My kid’s full competitive side shone through as the three of us competed against one another at the trivia multimedia stations.
What kind of strange things will you see and learn at this exhibition? There’s cow hairballs, whale lice, zombie-like ants, shrunken heads and more. Entomophagy is the practice of eating insects as the Bug Bistro fires up virtual dishes featuring bugs as the main ingredient. Kids can crawl through a life-size model of a prehistoric snake and get a first hand look at various optical illusions.
The largest draw was probably with Robert Wadlow, the world’s tallest man standing an incredible 8 ft 11.1 inches tall. Loved how the Science Centre placed a basketball net by Robert’s life-size statue so you can appreciate the perspective.
What surprised me was that the exhibition further reinforced my teen daughter’s love of science. Thank you Ontario Science Centre for inviting us, even though we passed on munching flavoured mealworms and crickets.
The Science of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! is included with admission to the Ontario Science Centre and runs through to September 5, 2016.
