July is a special month. Not only is it Canada’s birthday (long weekend, yay!) but this year also marks my youngest officially turning teen.
His birthday gift, which we begrudgingly got him was a longboard (aka skateboard). This has been something he’s been eyeing for months, it’s all he talked about, so we eventually gave in. Having had it for less than a week, he got into an accident. Unfortunately, his face took the brunt of the fall that required a trip to the ER with a few stitches to show for it. Needless to say, being a tween going on teen also means he’s become very self-conscious. My son wouldn’t leave the house for a week and a half and wouldn’t even allow friends to drop by. He refused to go see a movie (dark theatre I say, no one will see you, but still no go). So, there went our Canada Day long weekend plans.
We made the most of our time at home with him playing board and video games, but we also got to binge on shows as well. Netflix Canada has plenty of terrific Canadian content, so grab those ketchup chips, Smarties and poutine, fire up Netflix and discover these amazing shows with the Canadian touch.
My Tween & Teen Faves
Another show my daughter (and I) love that’s filmed in Vancouver is The 100. Based on the popular novel of the same name, the series is about a group of 100 juvenile delinquents who get sent to Earth from a dying space station 97 years after a nuclear war destroyed the planet to see whether Earth is inhabitable.
Another show I love is Suits, which is filmed in and around Toronto. And what’s not to love about Canadian Patrick J. Adams, who plays Mike Ross?!
On My Must-Watch List
Being a huge science fiction fan, I really enjoy shows like The X-Files and Wayward Pines. Netflix is set to debut season one of Stranger Things on July 15th, a Netflix Original show that stars upcoming Canadian actor Finn Wolfhard. The synopsis for Stranger Things from Netflix is:
When a young boy vanishes, a small town uncovers a mystery involving secret experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one strange little girl.
As you can see, there is no shortage of Canadian talent and with so much of Canada to explore, it’s no wonder more and more production crews are flying north to our beautiful country. So, what’s on your O Canada list, eh?
Disclosure: As a member of Netflix Canada’s Stream Team, I receive special perks as part of my affiliation with Netflix. As always, all opinions are my own.
About Wendy Morelli
Wendy loves her 2 kids and her iPhone, not necessarily always in that order. She is an app obsessed mom who loves everything tech and is (unfortunately) old enough to remember the brick Motorola cell phone and the Commodore computer. Her love for technology stems back to the 10+ years of working for technology based companies. Wendy's alter ego, "AppHipMom" has been featured in Canadian Family, iVillage, Women in Biz, EverythingMom, BlogHer and Savvy Mom.
