Now your tween can make and customize their very own Hot Wheels car with the Hot Wheels Car Maker. What a fantastic concept, especially in a world where crafts for preteen boys are few and far between.

Hot Wheels Car Maker Review
Our 9 and 10 year old toy testers couldn’t wait to bust open the box and get started in making their very own Hot Wheels cars. Although the toy is for ages 8+, adult supervision is required at various stages. Once the Car Maker is plugged in, a digital voice guides you through the process.
The Hot Wheels Car Maker creates the body of a Hot Wheels car to which you place on a chassis. The toy states that it makes 10 cars as the car bodies are interchangeable, but you can only play with 3 at any one time as there are only 3 chassis included.
You start by picking a car mold and inserting it into the machine with wax sticks. We love that the wax sticks come in different colours as the colours blend for a custom design. The first car the boys made came out black with pink spots.
The heating process takes approximately 7-8 minutes at which time the unit instructed us to pull down the handle at the top of the unit. This kicks off the cool down which takes about 10 minutes. The unit will tell you that it’s “heating” and “cooling” during processing times. And to further entertain you, funky techno music is played during this time (the boys did get sick of the music after several rounds). The unit is not hot to touch during the heating stage and the door is shut during this time. The door opens once cool down is complete.
The boys had trouble getting the car out of the mold after cool down so an adult had to step in to help. Once the car body is out of the mold, snap it on a chassis and decorate with decal stickers that come with the toy.
Additional car maker mold packs and wax sticks can be purchased separately.
The final product
In total, it takes approximately 30 minutes from start to finish and admittedly the boys did get bored waiting for the heating and cooling process. But once they saw their brand new Hot Wheels cars, all of that was quickly forgotten.
