As specialists in the field of physical literacy I am aware of the benefits associated with being physically active. At the end of the day, the more children we can get to participate and be successful in sport, the healthier is the future for these children physically and mentally!
As a teacher for 24 years, I had some rewarding positive impact on the children, but there were set-backs as well which provided the experience for growth. What all this experience has taught me is that if you truly want to make a difference for a child, then more focus needs to be on how to motivate the inactive ones and not as much on promoting the physically active ones who already have an understanding of how activity can benefit their lives.
The average school has a population of approximately 400 to 600 students. The current educational system focuses on developing the best school sport teams to represent the school. In order to accomplish this goal, try-outs are the means to select the best most athletic individuals. These individuals are usually involved in sport teams outside of the school. What we do in essence is allocate the majority of instructional time to the development of our superior athletes. This is consistent with giving the majority of our mathematical remedial assistance to the students who are already proficient at mathematics. This means that approximately 15% of the school will receive skill development to help them achieve athletic proficiency, but the students who are inactive will be left to develop confidence on their own. Intramural programs are one means of giving inactive students a chance to participate, but little instruction is provided and growth is minimal. Cross-country is great, but only starts at grade four.
So what can we do to help children develop self-esteem and confidence in the early grades? I have been involved in a program called Sport Stacking for the past 6 years and have seen many success stories unfold before my eyes. I have had parents express their gratitude in appreciation for providing their children with an opportunity to get involved in a school related program that allows them to build confidence and be recognized for a talent amongst their peers. Many of our students have set Ontario, Canadian, and even World Records. There are many schools who run Sport Stacking programs and have teams that compete in local Battle of the School tournaments every year. Every student who enters receives a medal for their accomplishments. There is a slogan that goes “See It, Teach It, Believe it!” to represent the impact of a Sport Stacking program on a school.
Find out what principals, teachers, parents and students who are involved are raving about. Now is the time to bring Sport Stacking to your school and give a chance for all children to get involved!
Sport Stacking is a fantastic activity, and the sport stacking events which I have attended as both a parent and an administrator have been nothing short of outstanding. The benefits of sport stacking as an activity, and the events themselves, are that they generate incredible enthusiasm and give every student an opportunity to actively participate. The events themselves help to generate school spirit, collaboration, confidence, audience participation, and a sense of pride for the stackers. Every event which I have attended has promoted fair play, co-operation, encouragement, and excitement enveloped in a music-filled, infectious atmosphere. The stackers leave with a sense of accomplishment. Great job all around. I recommend this activity and your events to anyone. Giancarlo Schirripa, Principal
