By the time your kids reach the tween years, they often have more “stuff” than they know what to do with. Even if they do want things like new clothes, books or music, they’re at an age where they likely prefer to pick out their own things.
The gift of an experience can be the perfect gift for this age group. Here are six of our favourite experience gift ideas for tweens:
A Trip to the Spa
I don’t know of too many tween girls who would turn down a chance to enjoy some pampering at a spa. Enjoy some mother-daughter bonding time by enjoying a mani-pedi together at your favourite place, or take her to a spa designed especially for kids. Glama Gal Tween Spa is a fun choice for girls between the ages of 6-16, with a range of spa packages offering fun features like chocolate facials, robe and slipper service, pink mocktails and yummy treats.

Most tweens are mature enough to sit through a full theatre or ballet performance and enjoy it. This can be a fun experience to share together that you will both remember for a long time. Most cities have shows around the holidays that would be appropriate for pre-teens. In Toronto, upcoming tween-friendly shows include:
- Ross Petty’s The Little Mermaid, Elgin Theatre, November 22 – January 4
- Once: A New Musical, Royal Alexandra Theatre, November 26 – January 5 (recommended for ages 10 & up due to some adult language)
- Disney on Ice: Princesses and Heroes, Rogers Centre, December 20 – 29 (fun for all ages)
- The National Ballet of Canada’s The Nutcracker, Four Seasons Centre, December 14 – January 4
- Shen Yun 2014, January 23 – 26, Sony Centre for the Performing Arts
- Disney’s The Lion King, Princess of Wales Theatre, April 30 – June 15
Tickets to a Sporting Event
If your son or daughter is a hockey fan, then tickets to a local NHL or minor league game makes a great gift. NHL tickets can be hard to get and expensive, but tickets to AHL games can be almost as fun and much more affordable. For instance, a family pass to a Toronto Marlies game starts at only $99 and includes 4 tickets, 4 meal vouchers, a parking pass and a souvenir. Tickets to an OHL team game such as the Oshawa Generals or Niagara Ice Dogs can be great fun for tweens too.
If hockey’s not your tween’s thing, try tickets to a Toronto Raptors or Harlem Globetrotters basketball game, a lacrosse game, or any other sport they enjoy. Monster Jam is also a fun event for this age group.
Whether their tastes are pop-rock, country or anything and everything, tweens love their music. They’re sure to love a gift of concert tickets. Some bands and artists coming to Toronto and other cities in Canada in 2014 include Demi Lovato, One Direction and Hedley.
An Adventurous Outing
If your tween is on the adventurous side, the gift of an adventure is sure to please. Options available for the 8-12 age group include:
A Visit with the Animals
If your tween loves animals, then why not give them a gift that lets them spend more time learning about them? A pass to an aquarium or zoo would be a great gift. If they haven’t visited the new Ripley’s Aquarium in Toronto, we’d highly recommend tickets to that – it’s incredible! Some zoos such as the Toronto Zoo and Jungle Cat World also offer special behind-the-scenes tours or day camps for tweens – another great gift idea!
