When our school participated in the annual Cross Country meet a few weeks back, it was wonderful to see so many girls running. Kudos to our parent and teacher coaches who encouraged the entire grade 7/8 class to run, whether it was the full 3 km course or the Fit for Life 1.5 km course. The one thing that always stumps me come race day is how to dress my kids. It’s easy enough to find athletic wear for my son but when it comes to my daughter, it’s way more of a challenge, and track pants just don’t quite cut it. Tween girls today want to wear clothes that fit to their body comfortably, is stylish and provide the range in motion they require. So it shouldn’t be surprising that Dragonwing girlgear is the brainchild of a soccer mom, MaryAnne Gucciardi, who was disappointed with what the marketplace had to offer. She had a difficult time finding active wear made for tween girls. Everything she found was targeted for boys or women, neither of which was an acceptable solution for her then tween daughter.
With her background as a textile importer, MaryAnne used her expertise to build Dragonwing girlgear, with the mission to sell high performance, comfortable and supportive undergarments for girls ages 8-17, so that they can play their game with confidence and not have to worry about being uncomfortable. Today, the Dragonwing line consists of sports bras, compression shorts, sports camis, and base layers. Their line of sports bras also makes a great choice for a girl’s first bra.
Tweenhood received samples of two of Dragonwing’s more popular items to try – the Racer Sports Bra and Chill Weight – Long Leggings. With a 13-year-old daughter playing competitive hockey, with on and off ice training in addition to playing school sports, I figured she could compare the Dragonwing apparel with what she’s currently wearing.
Though DD’s (darling daughter) not one to talk much about her clothes (let alone her undergarments), she absolutely loved the Racer Sports Bra. Whether she’s skating suicides on the ice, doing burpees or planks, she said it was extremely comfortable and soft, she didn’t feel it at all. It’s hands down the best bra she’s owned to date. Now that ‘s saying a lot, since all her bras are mostly sports bras, but you can really see and feel the difference with the Racer Sports Bra. The fabric is thicker than other sports bras and it has a good stretch to it. As a parent, I applaud the coverage, it’s not a skimpy garment. It’s more like a cross between a tank top and a bra. Features of the Dragongirl Racer Sports Bra include:
- made of fine-gauge yarn and bamboo for softness
- moisture-wicking and antimicrobial
- wide bottom band that won’t ride up
- seamless and tag-free, so there’s no chafing (DD so appreciates this)
- available in 4 colour combinations
She liked the Chill Weight Leggings also, but not to the same degree. DD is pretty tall for her age and the leggings, even at the largest size was a bit too snug of a fit than she would have liked. This is simply her personal preference. The base layer leggings are made to keep you warm in the cold, whether you’re running, skiing or playing hockey. Features of the Chill Weight Leggings include:
- fabric made from recycled plastic bottles (great for the environment)
- soft brushed inner lining with flat seams and tag-free for comfort
- moisture-wicking, 4-way stretch fabric is snug but not constricting
- antimicrobial, UV50 and odor absorbent
- small inner key pocket at waistband
- available in long (full length) or capri styles
After several wears and washes, both items still look brand new with no noticeable shrinkage. DD loves the bra so much, I’m washing it several times a week as that’s all she wants to wear. Unfortunately, she is a tad self-conscious to permit me to post photos of her (in a bra no less), so I must respect her wishes. However, she did ask me to get more bras for her (something she never ever wants to talk about).
