Do you remember the intense online debate in early 2015 about whether that photo of the dress was white and gold or blue and black? Which team were you on? Personally, I started on team #whiteandgold then suddenly could only see #blueandblack. Was it an optical illusion, or magic – or what? What a confusing few days those were!
When DK Canada offered to send me a copy of the book SENSEational Illusions to review, I knew I better be prepared to be confused by what I saw all over again. I was right! However, it wasn’t just my vision that was put to the test with this fun book.
SENSEational Illusions is a book filled with “mind-blowing sensory challenges, optical illusions, tricks and games” that will entertain and delight kids – and adults too!
There are plenty of optical illusions in SENSEational Illusions that may make you question your eyesight, like this one that asks how many colours are in the picture. At first glance, you will probably think the shark is orange and the fish is green or turquoise, but you’d be wrong.
As fun as they are, this engaging book is much more than just a book of optical illusions. It also covers mysteries and challenges pertaining to our other senses, including taste, touch, hearing, smell and body sense or proprioception. It’s filled with quick and simple experiments that kids will have fun trying out with their family and friends, such as:
Body Awareness (Proprioception) Challenges
and many more.
Cleverly hidden in among the short text describing the challenges are quick lessons in the science behind them, making this book both fun and educational – a rare combination indeed.
You might think you pay attention to details, but do you really? When you try these challenges you might be surprised by the results.
SENSEational Illusions would make a fun gift for tweens, and it would be perfect to have on hand at family gatherings where kids might have a tendency to get bored. I can totally see kids entertaining themselves and their relatives by challenging them to try out these quick experiments.

I received a copy of this book for review purposes. All opinions are completely my own.
