Tweens and teens are growing increasingly more knowledgeable and comfortable online. Stories pop up almost daily about what not to do online. It is often difficult for parents to stay on top of the ever-changing high tech landscape. The reality is that the Internet is not going away any time soon. So how can parents, educators, teens and tweens use the online space to do good? How do we encourage our kids to be good digital citizens? That is where an organization like A Platform for Good is much needed and applauded.
A Platform for Good is a project of the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI), created to help parents, teens and teachers connect, share and do all things good online. FOSI is an international non-profit organization that works to make the online world a safer place for children and parents. With partners from tech giants like Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Yahoo, FOSI works with leaders in the field to develop innovative solutions and policies for online safety.
If you’re a parent with a tween/teen online, A Platform for Good contains valuable information to get you and your child up to speed on everything your child is doing or wants to be doing online. Details on the various social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat are shared, including their privacy policies.
What’s awesome about A Platform for Good is that the information they are sharing are current and what the youth are actually doing online. Topics (including helpful video resources) include “What is Kik?”, “Ask.fm Online Safety Guide”, “Teach Young Kids To Be Cybersmart”, “Parental Controls” and “Digital Reputation”, just to name a few.
We are honoured that Sarah Hoffman from A Platform for Good asked Tweenhood to contribute to their blog on why we love technology. You can read Kathy’s post on Using Technology to Enrich You Life and my post on Why Parents Should Embrace Technology, both of which are posted on A Platform for Good’s blog.
Be sure to bookmark A Platform for Good and check back often to stay in touch with how your tween or teen may be navigating the tech superhighway.
