Nothing says summer like a neighbourhood lemonade stand! But instead of raising money to buy candy or the latest video game, why not encourage your kids to raise money for a worthy cause instead?
Though Plan Canada’s Because I am a Girl Pink LemonAid stand initiative, kids can help make a difference by supporting the empowerment and protection of girls around the world.
Did you know?
- Girls in the poorest regions of the world are among the most disadvantaged people on the planet.
- In the world’s poorest countries, 50% of girls do not attend secondary school and they are twice as likely to be malnourished as boys.
- 62 million girls around the world are being denied an education. (Source: Plan Canada)
But there is hope. It is proven that investing in girls in developing countries is key to reducing global poverty and instability. Girls have a unique power to influence the world around them – in fact it is said that investing in girls delivers a higher return than any other investment made in a country’s development.
For every year a girl stays in school, her future income can rise by 10-20% and her children are 5-10% more likely to survive. It is estimated that 4 million child deaths have been prevented over the past four decades thanks to the global increase in women’s education.
Plan Canada’s Because I am a Girl projects help empower and protect girls living in poverty by providing education, healthcare and nutrition to benefit girls and their communities.
The Pink LemonAid initiative encourages kids to hold a lemonade stand fundraiser to raise money to support Because I am a Girl projects around the world. Kids can have fun, learn some new skills and feel good about helping others all at the same time!
