Members of the Royal Family always makes headline news around the world. The fascination with Queen Elizabeth and her family never seems to wane and Netflix is banking on this with their lavish new original series, The Crown.
The new series stars Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II and Matt Smith as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The Crown chronicles the extraordinary life of Queen Elizabeth II, from that of a young Princess marrying the dashing Philip Mountbatten in 1952 to facing the pressures of leading the monarchy in a time of political disarray. I’ll be honest to say I didn’t know much about the Queen’s life prior to viewing the series. Having previewed the first 2 hours of The Crown thanks to Netflix Canada, I gained a newfound appreciation of how a young 25-year-old life changed in a blink of an eye.
The audience laughed in all the right places and being that it’s a drama, also had some very powerful scenes (like when Prince Philip goes hunting with King George). The ending of the second episode was extremely striking, with little doubt where
Princess Queen Elizabeth’s duty must lie. By the end of the evening, I became completely immersed with the monarchy from the exotic locales to the exquisite costumes.
It was a real treat to have 2 members of the cast in attendance for an intimate Q&A session with Netflix’s Stream Team. Jared Harris, who plays King George VI (the Queen’s dad) and Vanessa Kirby, who plays Princess Margaret (the Queen’s sister) shared stories from the set including filming at various locations and the extravagant costumes. They even shared who their favourite Royal is (Princess Margaret for Vanessa and Jared doesn’t have one).
Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II is the longest reigning Monarch in history — 64 years and counting. That’ll bode well for Netflix, as I’m hearing there may already be 6 seasons of the series in the works (yippee!).
So pardon me as I nibble on scones with clotted cream and drink a cup of hot tea while I binge watch The Crown starting November 4th on Netflix.
Disclosure: As a member of Netflix Canada’s Stream Team, I receive special perks as part of my affiliation with Netflix. As always, all opinions are my own.
