What’s the wildest thing a mom could possibly do with her family? How about visiting 6 continents and 29 countries all in a period of 12 months? That’s exactly what Heather Greenwood Davis, her husband Ish and their 2 boys, Ethan (11) and Cameron (9) accomplished 2 years ago.
Heather is an award winning travel writer and a Round the World trip has been a big dream for a long time. The trip presented Heather with an unique opportunity to visit remote destinations like Cambodia, Hayman Island, Tanzania and Mauritius, together with her family. Ethan and Cameron missed school, but the entire experience was truly something a classroom or even a textbook can’t teach. You can read about Heather’s travel adventures on her blog Globe Trotting Mama.
How are you planning to spend Mother’s Day? Do you have any Mother’s Day traditions?
Heather: We typically spend Mother’s Day at the kids’ grandparents’ place. They’re lucky enough to have two grandmothers they can celebrate with on that day and we try to spend time with both. There’s usually a big meal involved and some family time. I’ve heard rumblings that this might be the year I also get breakfast in bed!
What are some of your favourite activities to do with your mom?
Ethan: I like to travel and play some games with her like Hedbandz.
Cameron: I like to ride bikes and watch tv with my mom.
Can you share with us what makes your mom so special?
Ethan: What makes her special is that she watches movies that she does not really like with us and is fine with it and she helps my brother and I in every way she possibly can.
Cameron: She loves me. She does lots of stuff with me. She’s an awesome mom.
What makes you proud to be their mom?
Heather: I’m sure every mother says it but my boys are amazing. Their kindness to others, respectful natures and sense of humour all make me proud. I love that they aren’t afraid to be themselves, no matter the audience. I also love the way they treat each other. We’ve always stressed that they have in each other the one friend they’ll have forever and the fact that they are good to each other makes me proud.
If you could give your tween(s) one piece of advice you wish you knew at their age, what would it be?
Heather: The funny thing is that I feel like they could give my younger self a ton of advice! If I had to say one thing it would be that they should focus on the fun. I think kids in general can get stressed out at school and mine are no exception. As a kid, having fun should be your first priority. Heck, if you can swing it – as an adult too!
