Disclosure: I participated in a recent press trip of several Ohio State Parks and Lodges. I was provided with free accommodations, meals and other perks during our trip. All opinions expressed are my own.
Mohican State Park was the 3rd and final Ohio State Park we visited during our recent trip to Ohio. It seemed like a wonderful vacation spot for families looking to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings of this beautiful part of Ohio. Mohican State Park itself consists of 1110 acres of hilly forests and 5 miles of the scenic Clear Fork Branch of the Mohican River runs through the park. The park is surrounded by another 4795 acres of Mohican Memorial State Forest, making it feel like you are in the “middle of nowhere.”
Despite being a quiet and relaxed environment, Mohican State Park has plenty of activities to keep families busy. There are many opportunities to get out and enjoy nature, with a variety of activities including:
- hiking (trails include such scenic spots as falls, Clear Fork Gorge and a covered bridge)
- mountain biking, including a newly expanded 25 mile track
- canoeing on the Mohican river
- horseback riding
- cross country skiing
We stayed in the Mohican Lodge and Conference Centre in Mohican State Park. The rustic but comfortable lodge is located high on a hill, overlooking Pleasant Hill Lake and surrounded by forests. There are 96 guest rooms in the lodge, each with their own private balcony, as well as a restaurant, lounge and a number of cozy sitting areas throughout the lodge. There seemed to be quite a few groups of families staying at the lodge during our visit, and it apparently is a very popular spot for family reunions and gatherings.
Other accommodation options for visitors to Mohican State Park include camping and cottages.
On the grounds of the Mohican Lodge you will find shuffleboard courts, tennis courts, basketball courts, swimming pool (open during the summer months only), sand volleyball court, a playground, paved biking and walking trails and campfire pits. Inside the lodge families can enjoy the indoor pool, ping pong table, games rooms and a local birds display in the lobby.
On Saturday nights, the Mohican Lodge hosts a live Birds of Prey show for families with a representative from the Ohio Bird Sanctuary. We got to experience a sample of the show and meet Monty the Barn Owl and Seymour the Great Horned Owl. The birds even posed for selfies with several members of our group – something that I’m sure tweens would be sure to seize the opportunity to do too!
Mohican State Park offers a wide variety of Naturalist programs for families wanting to learn more about the local animals and environment. These programs are open to people staying at the lodge, campers and the general public. Some of the programs available include amphibian and butterfly hunts, bird watching experiences, snake demonstrations and guided hikes.
For families looking for more activities to enjoy during their stay, the Mohican Adventure Centre is a short drive away, offering rafting, tubing and guided canoe and kayaking trips down the Mohican River, go karts, an aerial park and mini golf.
If you’re looking for vacation spot in Ohio that lets you get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life but still offers lots of activities to keep the family busy, Mohican State Park might be just what you’re looking for!
