I love my tech toys and gadgets, so to prep for my post on the Top Tech Gifts for Tweens, the Future Shop invited Tweenhood to spend some time with one of their Product Experts to see what’s really hot for tweens this Christmas.
Andy was my guide and we looked at everything from gaming to tech toys and audio accessories and here are the highlights. So listen up if you have a tween on your holiday gift list.
Video gaming is near and dear to tween hearts and there’s little doubt that Disney’s Infinity and Skylanders SWAP Force will be forces to be reckoned with this Christmas. The Just Dance franchise has always been popular and the newly released Just Dance 2014 will get your tween off the couch and moving (win-win as I see it).
Though the Xbox One and Playstation 4 are the newest and hottest consoles on the block, Andy and Neil (gaming expert) recommended the Wii U to be a more suitable option for the 8-12 age group. I love that you can play using just the Wii U handheld GamePad, so if someone wants to watch tv, there’s no conflict.
Popular tech toys and gadgets include remote control quadcopters, the Zoomer Pup and E-Readers. All fabulous gift options for the tween guy or gal on your list.
Tweens love listening to music and at the audio section I got the Beats headphones 101 tutorial from audio expert Hiruy, who also just happens to be a musician (check out his album Destined to Be on iTunes, parental advisory warning). I won’t go over the entire Beats collection, but the bottom line is for tweens, the starter Solo headphones are the way to go (with all the fabulous colour options) followed by the newly designed Studio headphones (though more costly). But if your tween is not into brand names, there are so many options including Marley headphones that won’t break the bank.
Speakers make popular gifts as well and though Beats have their own line of speakers, it was the Klipsch portable wireless speakers that Hiruy recommended (though probably more for mom and dad than the kids). One thing’s for sure, when it comes to portable speakers, they come in all shapes and sizes at various price points. So lots of options here.
Of course the new iPad Air and iPhone 5C are popular for older tweens and the iPod touch or iPod shuffle are better bets for the younger tweens on your list.
I absolutely adore the LEGO iPod touch case I saw at the Future Shop. You can actually attach LEGO pieces to the outside of the case. How cool is that?! I also loved the Survivor iPod touch case in pink as I always only see more dark colours from Survivor.
If you have a musician in the family, Future Shop also sells acoustic and electric guitars, digital keyboards and electronic drum kits.
The hard to buy for tween isn’t so hard to buy for when you have the guys at the Future Shop here to lend a helping hand.
About Wendy Morelli
Wendy loves her 2 kids and her iPhone, not necessarily always in that order. She is an app obsessed mom who loves everything tech and is (unfortunately) old enough to remember the brick Motorola cell phone and the Commodore computer. Her love for technology stems back to the 10+ years of working for technology based companies. Wendy's alter ego, "AppHipMom" has been featured in Canadian Family, iVillage, Women in Biz, EverythingMom, BlogHer and Savvy Mom.
