Now that school is over, and the anticipation of Christmas is in full swing, how are you going to keep your kids from driving each other (or you) crazy – and still accomplish your never-ending holiday preparations?
How about encouraging your tweens to make some Christmas crafts? Crafting can be a fun way to spend some indoor time, particularly when the weather outside is nasty. And if you play your cards right, you may be able to get them to make some things you need for gift wrapping or holiday entertaining!
Here are some of my favourite Christmas crafts for tweens:
(they’re also fun for parents!)
1. Make Christmas Cards
Provide your kids with some card stock or thick paper and assorted craft supplies like markers, stamps, stickers, paints, glitter, felt, scrapbook paper or ribbon and let them get crafty making cards for family members, friends or relatives.
I love these DIY Felt Christmas Cards from Alex at Northstory, and they certainly look easy enough for tweens to do:
2. Create Christmas Ornaments
Handmade Christmas ornaments make wonderful family keepsakes for your own tree or gifts for relatives. They can also be used to decorate your Christmas gift packages.
For easy Christmas ornaments that are fun for tweens to make, buy some clear plastic or glass balls from a craft store like Michaels or the dollar store. Then then let your kids get creative with paints and a variety of other materials to create their own one-of-a-kind Christmas ornament. 3. Make Homemade Gift Tags
If you’re not one of those people that already has all of your holiday gifts purchased and wrapped, why not recruit some help from your tweens this year? Get them to make some handmade gift tags to spruce up your gifts for friends and relatives.
Kids can use any combination of card stock, old Christmas cards, scrapbook paper, construction paper, stickers, punches, stamps, ribbon or fabric to make gift tags that are as simple or as intricate as they desire. Just take a quick visit to Pinterest if they need some inspiration.
4. Design Your Own Christmas Wrapping Paper
Along the same lines, having your kids design their own Christmas wrapping paper is a fun project that makes your gift wrapping more unique and creative.
Just give them a supply of brown craft paper and tools like paints, sponges, markers, stamps, stickers, stencils or cookie cutters and let their imaginations run wild.
5. Make Christmas Place Setting Cards or Party Favours
If you’re hosting a Christmas dinner this year, recruit your tween to make some fun place card settings for everyone. Kids could draw pictures of each guest, wrap up tiny gift boxes with their names on them or make these cute candy cane place settings.
How cute are these Christmas Critters Treat Buckets from Craft Snob, made using toilet paper rolls? Tweens could make one for each child coming to your Christmas festivities.
