Summer is in full swing, and kids everywhere are having fun and enjoying the break from school. They should have nothing to complain about, right?
Have you heard those dreaded words yet? You know the ones… “I’m bored. There’s nothing to do…”
If so, I feel your pain. I really do. Now might be a good time to take a look at DK Canada’s Summer Fun Boutique. With a great selection of books for kids of all ages there’s sure to be something to keep your tweens occupied the next time summer boredom hits.
I recently had a chance to check out two of the books from the Summer Fun Boutique, The Big Book of Things to Make and The Big Book of Crafts and Activities. Both books are recommended for ages 7-12 and contain 100+ projects to keep kids busy and entertained. They’re ideal for rainy days, or when all your tween’s friends are away on vacation – or any other time they’re bored and need some help finding something fun to do.
While some of the ideas may be a little on the young side for many tweens, they would be perfect for doing with a younger sibling or friend. There’s enough more advanced activities that your tween should be able to find plenty of ideas in these books.
The Big Book of Things to Make is full of creative activities to make and things to do and learn about. With instructions for making things such as balloon drag racers, glow-in-the-dark jello, make your own slime and bottle rockets, there’s plenty of ideas here even for kids who don’t like traditional crafts. You’ll also find a trivia and quiz section covering topics such as snakes, robots, and how to survive in the wilderness, along with hands-on activity ideas such as juggling, flipbook animation, making a miniature golf course, and prank patrol (consider yourself warned!)
The Big Book of Crafts & Activities seems more geared to the tween girl crowd, with recipes, crafts, games and activities that are well-suited to doing with friends or on their own. Some of the activities in this book include sleepover games, friendship bracelets, origami animals, make-your-own bath bombs, beaded insects, balloon animals and music games. There’s also some delicious sounding recipes for a variety of treats such as smoothies, caramel popcorn and chocolate covered banana bites.
