Don’t the headlines “Latest Fall Fashion Trends”, “Hottest Looks This Fall” and “Must Have Brands This Fall” create a twang of anxiety? Not only does it mean the end of warm and sunny weather but the fact that our wardrobe has somehow become obsolete in a mere 12 month period.
The fact that we need NEW clothes for fall that are TRENDY…and COOL…and AWESOME…and …and…ARGHHH!
Sit down. Take a breath. It’s not the end of the world. Don’t stress out too much because luckily this year’s back to school and fall season fashion is pretty doable, affordable and easy to “fake it”. In a nutshell, the basics are just that, basic.
They are a necessary accessory – a “necessory” if you will. Can’t find that funky pack that speaks to you? Or is the one you want too expensive? Go DIY! Get creative…there are plenty of YouTube videos that will help you out. Think decorative trim/ribbon and a hot glue gun. Hang homemade Pom Poms or a perler bead creation from the zippers. If you’re super crafty get some acrylic craft paint and cookie cutter shapes to paint on your bag. And my fave, buy transfer paper to print photos/emojis/logos to iron on your pack. Make your backpack as unique are you are!
Converse are always on point. And high tops earn extra points in my book. Have you ever swapped one shoe with your BFF? You never know, you might start a trend. If Chucks aren’t your bag, there’s Dr. Martens, Toms, Bobs, Vans and good old runners (and don’t forget the funky socks). Oh, and ballet flats. Never turn your back on a comfy ballet flat. Since shoes take a pounding (literally), it’s best to allocate a few extra dollars to them as it will cost you extra to get another pair two months down the road.
Leggings. Yes, these pjs disguised as pants are still on trend. Bold patterns and colors are a must. Jeans make the grade too, and any style goes this season…coloured, distressed, dark wash, ripped, wide leg, skinny…whatever your jam is!
Have these ever gone OUT of style? Me thinks not. You can get them anywhere and at every price point. Stick to the positive messages though, negativity is so passé.
A BIT MORE FASHION FORWARD?
If you’re the type to go that extra mile, why not try a jumpsuit on for size? Any bag with fringe will do, and a nice ankle booty will go a long way in Style-ville. Oh, and a moto jacket never goes out of style. Never. Faux fur never hurt anyone either (literally).
Where to Spend and How to Save
Clothes are important, but so is eating, having a roof over your head and keeping the lights on! Shopping retail can be super expensive. More and more families are finding alternative avenues to avoid blowing their budget. And so they should, it’s important to teach kids at a young age that spending $100+ on jeans is not a viable option, especially when they are old enough to manage their own money.
Here are some ways around paying the big bucks:
- If you have a budget, allocate a bit more towards statement pieces and items you will get more than one season out of. I suggest good quality shoes, coats and backpacks/purses. Things like pants and tops/sweaters are easily found on sale almost anywhere.
- Keep your eyes open for your favourite store’s sale days. You can usually sign up for email notices. No need to pay full price for anything anymore.
- You’d be amazed at the treasures you will find at thrift shops and consignment stores. If you don’t mind searching through the “bleh” to get to the “wow” you will almost always find something. Some items are literally brand new and best news of all they are a fraction of the retail price.
- What about your friends? Get together and have a clothes swap party! I’m sure 100% of them have a closet full of clothes they don’t wear or that don’t fit.
- If you’re more of an entrepreneur, take your unwanted clothes to a consignment store. Put that money towards other items, whether new or bought from said consignment store.
Don’t Let the Media Get You Down
Every day we see what the Jenner/Kardashian girls are wearing. Even the Family Channel stars always look flawless. Really? Are these our go-to role models now? Just to let you in on a little secret…they have round-the-clock stylists and make-up artists constantly making them “camera ready”. Designers are begging them to wear their clothes, which they give away for free!
It’s no wonder we sometimes get a bit down on ourselves. But it’s not reality…it’s a total Wizard-of-Oz-Behind-the-Curtain-Smoke-and-Mirror-Dog-and-Pony-Show (too many adjectives?). You get the point, I hope. I’d rather get my fashion inspiration from my neighbour, cousin, big sis or BFF.
But at the end of the day, you can only do so much. Please do not stress out about being the “it” kid with all the latest “must haves”. I’d rather be kind, focus on my friends and family and have a good belly laugh at least once a day. And remember, the fashion blogs don’t know what they’re talking about…the BIGGEST fall trend this year is to JUST BE YOU!
